2017-18 Scholarships

DUE DATE (to Ms. Velhagen): Nov. 15:  Comcast Scholarship:  possibly worth $1,000.  Seniors only, w/strong records of community service/volunteer work & leadership, & at least a 2.8 GPA. Bring (or email) your resume & a typed paragraph describing your experience with service & leadership to Ms. Velhagen by Nov. 15, to be considered. Every HS can nominate only one senior; a scholarship committee will select the winning student.  Comcast then decides if they will award the student $1,000.

DUE DATE: Nov. 17: Optimist Club Oratorical (speech) Contest: open to ALL students (no minimum age limit) who haven't turned 18 as of Oct. 1, 2017. Chance to compete in speech contest at several levels for a college scholarship of $2,500. Topic: Where are my Roots of Optimism? See Ms. Velhagen for entry form and very specific guidelines; 4 - 5-minute speech will be performed on Nov. 30 at 6 PM in the EHS Lecture Hall.

DUE DATE: Nov. 30: Daniels Fund Scholarship:  competitive scholarship with financial need component. This incredible, competitive  scholarship pays ALL UNMET NEEDS for college!  Seniors only.  See website to see if you qualify.


DUE DATE: December 15 for essay & application form to be turned in to Ms. Velhagen: Optimist Club Essay Contest. $2,500. Open to all students younger than age 18 as of Oct. 1, 2018. Topic: Can Society Function Without Respect? Must fill out detailed application. See Ms. Velhagen for details and paper application.

DUE DATE: January 30, 2018: National Honor Society (NHS) Scholarship:  Awards: 
475 national semifinalists - $2,850 scholarship;

24 national finalists - $5,150 scholarship; 1 national winner - $22,650 scholarship. Seniors who are NHS members only. See website for details and you must contact Ms. Moleres, NHS Sponsor, to apply. Requires application & 3 recommendations.

DUE DATE: March 1, 2018 (must be emailed OR postmarked by this date): NM Education Council Scholarship. (8 awards, $1,000 each.) Seniors only, must attend in-state NM college or university (2-yr. or 4-yr. school). Selection is based on the student's desire to create a better New Mexico through educational attainment, as exemplified through the student's family, school, community, and academic ability, as well as the quality of the required essay. DUE DATE: March ?, 2018: Quest Bridge College Prep Scholars:  JUNIORS with outstanding grades & test scores + lower income backgrounds (typically households earning less than $65,000/yr. for a family of four, and often less). Fantastic opportunity. See website for details and application, and to see if you qualify. Ask Ms. Velhagen if you have questions! 

DUE DATE: March 9, 2018 to Ms. Velhagen. $800. Bryan Cline Memorial Soccer Scholarship. Senior varsity soccer players only.  See http://albuquerquefoundation.org/bryan-cline-memorial-soccer-scholarship-program.aspx for details and application, but please ignore deadline and instead: bring completed application packet to Ms. Velhagen by March 9 for committee judging!  Do not turn in to Principal Sandoval or mail to ACF.  One male & one female EHS varsity soccer player will be awarded this scholarship!


DUE DATE: March 12, 2018: Jiffy Lube Your Turn Behind the Wheel Scholarships: $1,500 (2 winners) and chance to compete for one $5,000 prize. Applications and details here on Jiffy Lube website. NM students DO win this!  Two categories: 1) Licensed teen drivers aged 16 - 18; 2) Students aged 15-17 who are taking driver's ed this school year. Write a 500-word essay on "What Drives You?"

DUE DATE (to Ms. Velhagen): April 13, 2018. $2,000 (over 4 years). Manuel Lujan Scholarship, for Seniors attending public college in-state. DUE DATE: January--, 2018: JUNIORS ONLY!  New Mexico Leadership Institute's $15,000 scholarship, available to juniors who plan to attend either UNM or NMSU, and who are passionate about leadership, community work, and being future leaders of NM. For more information, click here.  (https://www.newmexicoleadership.org/) The $15K CAN be stacked on top of other academic or need-based scholarships the student receives from UNM or NMSU.  See Ms. Velhagen with any questions.  (EHS students have won this scholarship over the past 2 years, since its inception.)

DUE DATE: February--, 2018. $3,000 (2 winners).  Open to graduating seniors only.  Coalition of Educational Leaders (NMCEL): Preference given to students considering a major in the field of education, incl. teaching, counseling, school business, HR, etc. Must have 3.0 GPA or better. Andrew Piech Memorial Scholarship : Assistance to students in the field of Automotive Technology and related Applied Technologies. Students must pursue a degree or certificate from a nonprofit, public, automotive or technical vocational institution including community colleges.


Charlie & Kathy Barnhart and Ken Hayes, Jr. Manufactured Housing Association Scholarship Fund: Assistance to NM graduating high school seniors residing in a manufactured home.

Notah Begay III Scholarship Fund: Assistance to Native American athletes attending college. Awards are made to NM high school graduating seniors demonstrating strong academic achievement and participation in any varsity level team sport.

Sussman-Miller Educational Assistance Fund: Assistance to students to further their education in an undergraduate program who need financial assistance to address the ‘gap’ in financial aid packages.

David R. Woodling Memorial Scholarship: Assistance to students attending an accredited nonprofit or public educational institution in pursuit of a certificate or degree in a metals technology program with a concentration in machine tool technology and welding.

Youth in Foster Care Scholarship Fund: Assistance to young adults who have been in the New Mexico foster care system who want to develop a marketable skill or continue their education at a post-secondary school.

Bryan Cline Memorial Soccer Scholarship Fund: NOTE INSTRUCTIONS FROM MS. VELHAGEN ABOVE**!

$800 to Eldorado High School varsity soccer team graduating seniors. (One male and one female.)

James Ledwith Memorial Scholarship Fund: Assistance​ to students for post-secondary education in pursuit of a life dream with hope, faith and courage in spite of facing hardship. This scholarship is for students who are pursuing a professional goal and have faced or facing adversity.

Kiwanis Club of Albuquerque Scholarship Fund:  Assistance to graduating students with strong community service experience and strong academic records from an Albuquerque metro area high school, who are planning a career in child development and/or teaching.

Manuel Lujan Excellence in Education Scholarship Fund: NOTE INSTRUCTIONS FROM MS. VELHAGEN BELOW!* Assistance for graduating seniors from 24 designated central New Mexico high schools attending a NM four-year college/university.  Each designated high school selects one student for a $500 per year award, renewable for a total of four years of undergraduate studies.​


Woodcock Family Education Scholarship Fund: Assistance to Albuquerque metro area high school graduating seniors of exceptional promise in the fields of science and math.

DUE DATE:  March 2018.  $1,000.  Iota Psi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. scholarship: senior male students of color only. Re: academic excellence and contributions to school and community. This assistance is in the form of a one-time scholarship award in the amount of $1,000.00. This scholarship is a charitable cause of Iota Psi Lambda Albuquerque Alumni Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc and is administered through the E.S. DUE DATE:  March 2018. $1,000. Seniors only.  BEStstaff, Inc. Scholarship.  Must meet the following criteria to be considered: 1. Attend a traditional APS school/APS-affiliated Charter School. 2. Demonstrate community involvement and service through school-wide and extracurricular activities, church and/or other organizations. Deadline & application coming ASAP.

DUE DATE: April 2018: ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Math & Science Scholarships: $5,000, graduating African American or Hispanic seniors only. Deadline & application coming ASAP.

DUE DATE: April 2018: Camilla Rowe Memorial Scholarship. $1,200. For seniors only who attended Eisenhower MS for at least 1 year. Camilla Rowe was a beloved teacher at EMS whose teaching philosophy emphasized to her students "to question, seek answers, and question again in the search of Truth".  Her family established this scholarship in her honor. DUE DATE: April 2018. EHS Seniors only. EHS Career & Technical Ed. (CTE) Department Scholarship (funded by proceeds from 2016-17 Cupcake Wars!). Requirements:  1) must have taken at least 2 CTE classes in one program or pathway (i.e., 2 culinary courses, 2 woods courses, etc.); 2) plan to pursue a related career; 3) 2.5 GPA. Requires letters of recommendation & application. One EHS student will be awarded this scholarship!

DUE DATE: April 2018. Seniors only. EHS Educators Rising scholarship. Must be pursuing a degree in education and have been a part of the EHS education pathway sometime during your 4 years of HS (they don't need to be a current student). One EHS student will be awarded this scholarship!

DUE DATE: April 2018.  Eldorado Go Getter Scholarship. $1,000. Seniors only. Former EHS student Marques Lopez wants to give back to the place that helped teach him the value of setting & achieving goals. Requires 2.8 GPA or higher, and "financial need". See application and answer 2 questions: 1) What makes you a "Go Getter"? What motivates you to want to succeed? 2) From a financial standpoint, how big of a help will this scholarship be to you? One EHS student will be awarded this scholarship!

DUE DATE: May 1 (postmarked by --): William M. Olson/Warren E. Taylor Science & Engineering Scholarships: $2,500, seniors planning to major in science or engineering only.

DUE DATE: May 2018: Amy Biehl Youth Spirit Award: $1,000 or $500. Open to students 13 - 18 who are committed to community service. Amy Biehl, a graduate of Santa Fe High School, understood that, as an American, she had it better than many people in much of the world. She also believed that she had a duty to give back—to make life better for others who were not so fortunate. To that end, Amy went to South Africa at the age of 26 as a Fulbright Scholar to help that country’s leaders develop a new constitution. While conducting voter registration for South Africa’s first all-race election—the election that would end apartheid—she was killed in a riot. The Amy Biehl Youth Spirit Award was founded by New Mexico Voices for Children in 1993—the year that Amy died. The award honors Amy’s commitment to serve by honoring young people in New Mexico who have stepped up to bring positive change to their communities and/or the world at large through community service. One first place winner and one second place winner are named from each of the two age groups (13-18 and 19-26), and will receive scholarship awards. Info & application to be updated here ASAP.

DUE DATE:  June --2018.  Seniors only. $1,000.  Aspiring Nurse Scholarship. $1,000 scholarship to an aspiring nurse who best demonstrates: a track record of academic excellence, particularly in science & math; a passion for the nursing profession and field of healthcare. Open to all HS seniors who plan to pursue college education in nursing, including LPN / LVN, ADN, and BSN programs.
