DUE DATE: Nov. 29, 2018: SENIORS ONLY.  This incredible, competitive scholarship pays ALL UNMET NEEDS for college!  Eldorado students have won it in past years. There is a "financial need" component, which is determined by your FAFSA.  See Daniels website here to check if you qualify.

DATE: ?Sometime in 2018?: Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship: seniors only. $1,000. Detailed application, requires essay & recommendation! This is open to ALL seniors, and one student is usually selected from each APS high school, so apply! Deadline used to be in September, but the organization is revamping their procedure and as of Oct. 2018, Martin Luther King Multicultural Council's website has not been updated but keep checking: http://www.mlkmc.com

DUE DATE: Oct. 17, 2018 (for Phase 1): Wendy's Heisman Scholarship: senior student-athletes with 3.0 GPA & community involvement only; application/competition has several phases and requires HS staff nomination; can be $1,000/$5,000/$10,000. Apply/information here.  

DUE DATE: Oct. 22, 2018: ACES-NM Young Asian American Youth Award, $250: Open to grades 10 - 12, NM High Schools. 3 to 5 awards will be given. Details and application here. Requires application, official transcript (order from Registrar in Counseling) and letter of support.

DUE DATE: October 25, 2018:  Horatio Alger Scholarship (106 Awards - $25,000).  Information/application here. Seniors only, must be U.S. citizen. Assists students who have demonstrated integrity, perseverance in overcoming adversity, strength of character, financial need ($55,000 or lower), a good academic record (2.0 min.), commitment to pursue a college education, and a desire to contribute to society.

DUE DATE (to Ms. Velhagen): Nov. ?, 2018:  Comcast Scholarship:  possibly worth $1,000.  Seniors only, w/strong records of community service/volunteer work & leadership, & at least a 2.8 GPA. Bring (or email) your resume & a typed paragraph describing your experience with service & leadership to Ms. Velhagen by Nov. ?, to be considered. Every HS can nominate only one senior; a scholarship committee will select the winning student.  Comcast then decides if they will award the student $1,000. AS OF OCT. 16, STILL AWAITING NEWS FROM COMCAST ON DEADLINE.

DUE DATE: Nov. 28, 2018: Optimist Club Oratorical (speech) Contest: open to ALL students (no minimum age limit) who haven't turned 19 as of Oct. 1, 2018. Chance to compete in speech contest at several levels for college scholarships of $2,500/$1,500/$1,000. Topic: "Is There a Fine Line Between Optimism & Reality?"  See Ms. Velhagen for entry form and very specific guidelines; 4 - 5-minute speech will be performed in the EHS Lecture Hall on Dec. 6, 2018 at 5 - 7 PM.

DUE DATE: Nov. ?: Elks Most Valuable Student Scholarship (500 Awards - $50,000). Information/application here.

DUE DATE: December 15, 2018:  AXA Achievement Scholarship. $10,000 for 1 student from NM! Seniors only.  
Must demonstrate ambition and self-drive as evidenced by outstanding achievement in school, community or work-related activities. Special consideration given to achievements that empower society to mitigate risk through education and/or action in areas such as financial, environmental, health, safety and/or emergency preparedness. Details & application here.

DUE DATE: January 18, 2019Optimist Club Essay Contest. $2,500. Open to all students younger than age 19 as of Oct. 1, 2018. Essay Topic (700-800 words): "When All the World's Problems are Solved, is Optimism Still Necessary?". Must fill out detailed application and provide proof of age. See Ms. Velhagen for details and paper application.

DUE DATE: January 18, 2019: DECA Scholarships. Must be an active DECA member. Information here! 

DUE DATE: January ?, 2019: National Honor Society (NHS) Scholarship:  Awards: 
475 national semifinalists - $2,850 scholarship; 24 national finalists - $5,150 scholarship; 1 national winner - $22,650 scholarship. Seniors who are NHS members only. See website for details and you must contact Ms. Moleres, NHS Sponsor, to apply. Requires application & 3 recommendations.

DUE DATE: March 2019: Quest Bridge College Prep Scholars:  JUNIORS with outstanding grades & test scores + lower income backgrounds (typically households earning less than $65,000/yr. for a family of four, and often less). Fantastic opportunity. See website for details and application, and to see if you qualify. Ask Ms. Velhagen if you have questions!

DUE DATE: March 2019: Charlie & Kathy Barnhart and Ken Hayes, Jr. Manufactured Housing Association Scholarship Fund through Albuquerque Community Foundation. Up to $1,000 assistance to NM graduating high school seniors residing in a manufactured (mobile) home. GPA minimum: 3.0.


DUE DATE: March 2019: Youth in Foster Care Scholarship Fund: Assistance to young adults who have been in the New Mexico foster care system who want to develop a marketable skill or continue their education at a post-secondary school.

DUE DATE: March 2019: James Ledwith Memorial Scholarship Fund: Assistance​ to students for post-secondary education in pursuit of a life dream with hope, faith and courage in spite of facing hardship. This scholarship is for students who are pursuing a professional goal and have faced or facing adversity.

DUE DATE: March 2019: Kiwanis Club of Albuquerque Scholarship Fund:  Assistance to graduating students with strong community service experience and strong academic records from an Albuquerque metro area high school, who are planning a career in child development and/or teaching.

DUE DATE: March 2019: Woodcock Family Education FundAssistance to Albuquerque metro area high school graduating seniors of exceptional promise in the fields of science and math.

DUE DATE: March 1, 2019 (must be emailed OR postmarked by this date): NM Education Council Scholarship. (8 awards, $1,000 each.) Seniors only, must attend in-state NM college or university (2-yr. or 4-yr. school). Selection is based on the student's desire to create a better New Mexico through educational attainment, as exemplified through the student's family, school, community, and academic ability, as well as the quality of the required essay. DUE DATE: March ?, 2019: Mayflower Society of NM $1,620 Scholarship (seniors & current college students only): requires essay re: Mayflower Compact, resume, transcript & 2 letters of rec. Application will be available on Mayflower website here.

DUE DATE: March ?, 2019 bring to Ms. Velhagen. $800. Bryan Cline Memorial Soccer Scholarship. Senior varsity soccer players only.  See Albuquerque Community Foundation Bryan Cline page for details and application only, but please ignore deadline and instead: bring completed application packet to Ms. Velhagen by March -- for committee judging!  Do not turn in to Principal Sandoval or mail to ACF. One male & one female EHS varsity soccer player will be awarded this scholarship!

DUE DATE: March ?, 2019: Jiffy Lube Your Turn Behind the Wheel Scholarships: $1,500 (2 winners) and chance to compete for one $5,000 prize. Applications and details here on Jiffy Lube website. NM students DO win this!  Two categories: 1) Licensed teen drivers aged 16 - 18; 2) Students aged 15-17 who are taking driver's ed this school year. Write a 500-word essay on "What Drives You?"

DUE DATE: March ?, 2019: NM Federation of Republican Women Scholarship: $1,500 to senior female only.  Student or parent must be registered Republican. Requires application, letter of interest, resume, 2 letters of reference.  Application & details should be available here in 2018-19 or pick up paper copy from Ms. Velhagen.

DUE DATE: March ?, 2019: The Margaret E. Carson Scholarship from the Albuquerque Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.: seniors only, need-based scholarship for students of color, must attend an in-state college. Requires application, transcript, letters of recommendation & brief essay describing how receiving this scholarship will help you as you matriculate through college – working toward your life’s goal.  Click here for website & application.

DUE DATE: March ?, 2019: "Always an Eagle" Scholarship, sponsored by EHS Class of 1981: $500.81 to one EHS senior male & 1 senior female. Requirements: 2.5 GPA, plans to further your education after HS, strong attendance record. Must complete application (will be posted later in 2018-19 school year) and bring it, along with 250-word (or less) essay re: how your experience at EHS has encouraged you to advance your education; also requires letter of recommendation from teacher re: how you embody one or more of these qualities: respectful, responsible, dependable, actively involved, engaged/take initiative. DUE DATE: March 2019: NM Engineering Foundation Scholarships: amounts & requirements vary. See website for details and applications. READ THROUGH WEBSITE CAREFULLY! The NM Engineering Foundation offers both university and high school scholarships. University scholarships are primarily offered in the spring and are designated for students majoring in engineering, math, or science at a New Mexico college or university. High school scholarships are offered in the spring and are designated for graduating high school seniors at New Mexico high schools who plan to pursue undergraduate degrees in engineering, math, or science.

DUE DATE (to Ms. Velhagen): April 2019. $2,000 (over 4 years). Manuel Lujan Scholarship, for Seniors attending public college in-state. Only way to apply: must get paper application from Ms. Velhagen or online at http://albuquerquefoundation.org/high-school-scholarships.aspx -- but be sure to turn in to Ms. Velhagen by April deadline set by Ms. Velhagen! Ignore date & instructions on online copy of application form! One EHS student will be awarded this scholarship!

DUE DATE: April 15, 2019: Koffler Art Scholarship. $1,000. For seniors only, who plan to pursue a visual art career. Portfolio and application required.  See Ms. Velhagen for application & guidance. One EHS student will be awarded this scholarship!


DUE DATE: April 2019: Distracted Driving Family Plan Scholarship, sponsored by Bert Parnell Law Firm: $2,500: first place/$1,500: second place/$1,000: third place. Open to ALL high school students. Details & application instructions at: https://www.hurtcallbert.com/scholarships/

DUE DATE: April 2019: Camilla Rowe Memorial Scholarship. $1,200. For seniors only who attended Eisenhower MS for at least 1 year. Camilla Rowe was a beloved teacher at EMS whose teaching philosophy emphasized to her students "to question, seek answers, and question again in the search of Truth".  Her family established this scholarship in her honor. DUE DATE*: April 2019Sussman-Miller Educational Assistance Fund through Albuquerque Community Foundation. $500 to $2,000 assistance to students to further their education in an undergraduate program OUT-OF-STATE OR AT IN-STATE PRIVATE COLLEGES*, who need financial assistance to address the ‘gap’ in financial aid packages. *PLEASE NOTE: two different receipt deadlines/categories for Sussman-Miller: 1) Deadline for students who will attend out-of-state schools or in-state private schools: April 2019; 2) Deadline for students will attend New Mexico state public schools: June 2019.

DUE DATE: April 2019: Amy Biehl Youth Spirit Award: $1,000 or $500. Open to students 13 - 18 who are committed to community service. Amy Biehl, a graduate of Santa Fe High School, understood that, as an American, she had it better than many people in much of the world. She also believed that she had a duty to give back—to make life better for others who were not so fortunate. To that end, Amy went to South Africa at the age of 26 as a Fulbright Scholar to help that country’s leaders develop a new constitution. While conducting voter registration for South Africa’s first all-race election—the election that would end apartheid—she was killed in a riot. The Amy Biehl Youth Spirit Award was founded by New Mexico Voices for Children in 1993—the year that Amy died. The award honors Amy’s commitment to serve by honoring young people in New Mexico who have stepped up to bring positive change to their communities and/or the world at large through community service. One first place winner and one second place winner are named from each of the two age groups (13-18 and 19-26), and will receive scholarship awards. Info & application here.

DUE DATE: April 2019.  Eldorado Go Getter Scholarship. $1,000. Seniors only. Former EHS student Marques Lopez wants to give back to the place that helped teach him the value of setting & achieving goals. Requires 2.8 GPA or higher, and "financial need". Application will be posted in winter 2018.  One EHS student will be awarded this scholarship!

DUE DATE: May 2019: William M. Olson/Warren E. Taylor Science & Engineering Scholarships: $2,500, seniors planning to major in science or engineering only.  See website for details & online application.

Kirtland Federal Credit Union Club F.I.T. scholarships (total of 3: $2,000, $1,500, and $1,000). Seniors only; must be a member, child, or grandchild of a member in good standing with Kirtland Federal Credit Union. Must be accepted to an accredited 2- or 4-year institution and attending college for the first time. Scholarship must be used exclusively to pay the tuition or associated costs of named winner only at an accredited 2- or 4- year institution. Submit a 500–700 word essay on the topic:  “How has your family background affected the way you see the world? DUE DATE:  June ? 2019: Andrew Piech Memorial Scholarship through the Albuquerque Community Foundation. Assistance up to $2,200 to students in the field of Automotive Technology and related Applied Technologies. Students must pursue a degree or certificate from a nonprofit, public automotive or technical vocational institution including community colleges.

DUE DATE: June ? 2019: David R. Woodling Memorial Scholarship through the Albuquerque Community Foundation. Up to $4,600 in assistance to student(s) attending an accredited nonprofit or public educational institution in pursuit of a certificate or degree in a metals technology program with a concentration in machine tool technology and welding.

Open to students aged 13 or older.  Submit an online written response to the question: "OMG... finding and applying for scholarships is serious business, but it's time to lighten things up a little. We don't want to know why you deserve $1,500 or how great your grades are, we simply want to LOL. Describe an incident in your life, funny or embarrassing (fact or fiction), and make us laugh!" October ?, 2019: AES Scholarship. $500. Seniors only. Brief essay on topic: When you look back on your life in 30 years, what would it take for you to consider your life successful? What relationships or accomplishments will be important on this journey?  Submit essay to scholarships@aesengineers.com  There is no application packet for this award. Be sure to include your full name as well as the name of the school you are attending this year and your plans for next year. DUE DATE: October ?, 2019:  Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards:  Students apply for grants of varying $$$ in several categories: education, business, healthcare & science, media & entertainment, STEM, and community service.  See website for details. Eligibility: Must be graduating in Spring 2019; Must have at least an unweighted 3.0 GPA; Be of Hispanic Heritage (includes Spain, Brazil, Philippines); Planning to enroll full-time in a bachelor’s degree program at an accredited higher education institution in the fall directly after HS graduation; If selected, must attend the regional ceremony. Travel to the ceremony will be at the recipient’s expense; Completed online application including a letter of recommendation, transcript and essay questions; Be a Permanent Resident, DACA, U.S. Citizen or Eligible Non-Citizen.
